Plastic cabinets, often referred to as laminate, are not the easiest surface to paint. However, you can paint them with great results if the surface is well prepped before beginning. In fact, painted plastic cabinets are extremely popular, especially in light and bright colors like white and cream. You can instantly transform your plastic kitchen or bath cabinets by using the right paint.
Clean the surface of the cabinets with a degreasing cleaner like 409 or Windex. Scrub them thoroughly to remove all surface dirt that might degrade your paint job.
Tape off any areas that you don't want painted. Cover counters and floors with drop cloths or newspaper. Remove hardware from the doors and drawers.
Use damp rags to remove all sanding dust.
Apply a primer designed for use on slick surfaces. Glidden Gripper and BINZ are both good choices and will bond tightly to the plastic. Use a trim brush to cut in the corners and other detailed areas. Go over the edges with a smooth foam roller. Roll the flat areas in a thin, even coat. Allow the primer to dry completely and apply a second coat if necessary.
Paint the cabinets using latex paint in your choice of color. Glossier paints will be more durable and will be easier to clean. Choose eggshell or semi-gloss for a less shiny look that still cleans easily. Use the same painting technique that you used for the primer. Multiple thin coats will create a harder, more durable finish. Apply a thin coat and allow it to dry completely before adding additional coats. Allow the paint to dry completely before replacing hardware and removing the tape.
