If you want to change the look of your previously painted plastic shower enclosure, repainting the panel will give your bathroom a new look. Fortunately, applying new paint to the shower does not involve removing the old paint. In addition, today's spray paint manufacturers make plastic spray paints in a wide variety of colors. Some paints even have textured finishes that mimic the look of natural stone and hammered surfaces.
Clean the surface of the old shower enclosure using any cleaner with an ammonia base and a sponge. Use a toothbrush or other small, firm brush to thoroughly scrub any places where mold has grown.
Allow the surface of the plastic enclosure to fully dry.
Sand the surface of the plastic shower enclosure using a fine-grit sandpaper. Try to make the old painted surface of the enclosure as smooth as possible. Use a delicate touch, being careful not to create deep scratches.
Remove any dust from the enclosure using a soft dust cloth or rag.
Protect the area surrounding the enclosure using painter's masking tape. In addition, cover the shower's faucet and handles.
Shake the can of spray paint well to ensure an even color.
Spray a thin coat of the plastic paint onto the surface. Be careful not to spray in one area for too long to avoid drips and excessive pools of paint. Hold the can about 12 inches from the plastic enclosure while spraying.
Allow the first coat of paint to dry for approximately 15 minutes.
Apply a second coat of paint using the same technique. Ensure that the paint covers the old paint color, being careful not to miss any areas. The coat should be smooth and even.
Allow the plastic shower enclosure to dry completely. Though the paint will dry in 15 minutes, do not handle the enclosure for at least one hour.
Remove the painter's masking tape from the surrounding area.
